워쇼스키 남매의 영화 < 주피터 어센딩 > 촬영을 마치고, 한창 < 도희야 > 촬영 중인 그녀는 여전히 우리가 알고 있는 그대로였다. 바라만 봐도 휘파람 소리가 들리는 듯 기분이 좋아지는 배두나, 그녀가 뉴욕에서 보내온 편지 한 통.
Doona was the same Doona Bae. She was in the middle of filming "Dohee-ya" after having wrapped up another of the Wachowskis' movie "Jupiter Ascending" You feel better by just looking at Doona: it is as if listening to somebody whistling. She's sent a letter from NYC.
"요즘은 옷을 많이 사지 않아요. 20대 때는 갖고 싶은 것을 다 사는 편이었다면 지금은 비워가는 중이랄까….(웃음)"
"I don't buy much clothes nowadays. I bought almost all of what I wanted in my 20's but now I am sort of emptying out..." (Laugh)
"아직 해외에서 많은 분이 알아보거나 하지는 않아요. 의외로 유럽에서는 영화 < 클라우드 아틀라스 > 보다 < 괴물 > 을 보고 알아보는 ?팬이 있어서 놀랐죠."
"Not many people recognize me abroad. What is interesting is that in Europe I get recognized for being in "The Host" rather than for "Cloud Atlas"
오랫만이다. 런던과 시카고를 오가며 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있는 배두나가 새로운 영화 < 도희야 > 촬영을 위해 한국을 찾았다.
It's been a while. Doona Bae, who is busy travellingLondon and Chicago, came back to Korea to be in a new movie "Doheeya".
영화 < 클라우드 아틀라스 > 에 이어 워쇼스키 남매의 신작 < 주피터 어센딩 > 으로 다시 한 번 할리우드에 이름을 알리며 새로운 영역을 개척해가고 있는 그녀가 키엘과 함께한 사회 공헌 프로젝트와 영화 그리고 일상에 대한 자신의 이야기를 들려주었다.
Doona, who, with her second movie with the Wachowskis, is venturing into the new world of Hollywood, told us about her philanthropic project with the Kiehl's , her movies and her daily life.
워쇼스키 남매와의 두 번째 만남 < 클라우드 아틀라스 > 를 촬영할 때부터 < 주피터 어센딩 > 출연 제안을 받았다.
The Second work with the Wachowskis: they had asked me to appear in "Jupiter Ascending" during the "Cloud Atlas" filming.
솔직히 SF는 경험해보지 못한 장르여서 신선하기도 했고. 내가 작품을 선택했다기보다 그들이 나를 선택했다고 해야 할 것 같다. 비주얼 면에서 깜짝 놀랄 만한 역할이다. 그동안 맡아온 역할과 많이 다른 변신이 될 거다.
I haven't done any SF movies before so it was appealing. It is more like they picked me rather than I picked the movie (Jupiter Ascending). My role will surprise you in terms of looks. It will be a total change from all the roles of the past.
런던과 시카고 런던과 시카고에서 < 주피터 어센딩 > 촬영을 했다.
"Jupiter Ascedning" filming was done in London and Chicago.
예산이 2억 달러 정도 되는 스케일 큰 영화로, < 클라우드 아틀라스 > 와 비교해도 두배에 가까운 규모다. 그래도 분위기가 < 클라우드 아틀라스 > 와 비슷하고 감독님과 스타일리스트, 메이크업 아티스트 등 이전에 함께 일한 스태프가 많아 편안하게 촬영할 수 있었다. Jupiter Ascending's budget was around $20,000,000, and its scale was twice the size of Cloud Atlas. Still the atmosphere in the set was similar to that of Cloud Atlas-the same directors as well as many of the staffs whom I had worked before-stylists, make-up artists.
< 주피터 어센딩 > 촬영 현장 그리고 배우들 할리우드라고 크게 다르지는 않다.
Jupiter Ascending filming set and the cast actors: Hollywood is not that different.
다만 영어에는 존댓말이 없다 보니 나이에 상관없이 스태프나 배우나 다 친구가 되는 분위기다. 워쇼스키 감독님들과는 친해서 정말 편안하게 지내며 촬영했다. 감독님들 집에 다 같이 놀러 갈 정도로. 많은 배우와 함께 촬영하진 않았지만 함께 촬영한 채닝 테이텀은 의외로 성격이 털털하다. 할리우드 스타 같지 않다고 할까? 모든 스태프가 좋아하고 잘 어울리는, '호남형' 배우라는 느낌을 받았다.
Only thing is that because English language lacks honorific terms, it helps the staff and the cast become friends regardless of age differences. I have become very close to the Wachowskis especially and so even visited them at their homes. I have not worked with many of other casts but Channing Tatum with whom I filmed with is unexpectedly very easy-going. He's not like typical "Hollywood" star? All the staff loved him and hung around together much. He seemed to be a "good guy" actor.
해외에서의 일상 < 주피터 어센딩 > 에서 내 분량이 아주 많은 편은 아니라서 개인적인 시간도 좀 보냈다.
Because my role was a small role, I could have some personal time abroad.
런던에서는 두 달 정도 평범하게 여행을 하며 지냈다. 예전에 런던으로 공부하러 갔을 때 사귄 친구들도 만나면서 오랜만에 편안한 시간을 보냈다.
I took a trip when I was staying in London for two months. I could have a relaxing time re-connecting with friends I had made when I was in London previously to learn English.
새로운 영화 < 도희야 > 연달아 SF 영화 두 편을 하다 보니 < 도희야 > 가 더 눈에 들었다. "Doheeya" interested me after two consecutive SF movies.
사실 영화를 까다롭게 고르는 편인데 < 도희야 > 는 한 시간 반 만에 시나리오를 읽고 바로 승낙했다. 지금까지 작품을 선택하는 데 걸린 시간 중 최단 시간이었다. < 복수는 나의 것 > 도 비슷했는데, 아마 < 도희야 > 가 좀 더 짧지 않나 싶다. 그 정도로 마음에 들었다.
To be frank, I am quite picky about choosing the next project, but I read the scenario for "Doheeya" in one and half hours and then said yes to be in it. That is the shortest time that I ever had taken in all my career. Well, "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance" might come close but still "Doheeya" took slightly shorter time (for her to decide). I loved it that much.
< 도희야 > 의 김새론 영화에 함께 출연하는 새론이는 순수하다.
"Doheeya"'s Kim Sae-Ron: Sae-Ron is "unsullied"
가끔 아역 배우 중에는 어린 나이에도 애어른 같은 느낌이 드는 배우가 있는데, 새론이는 제 나이에 맞게 말하고 행동한다. 그리고 그 순수함에서 그런 연기가 나오는 게 아닌가 싶다. 앞으로가 더욱 기대되는 배우다.
Some child actors seem too mature despite their real ge, but Sae-Ron acts and talks her age. Her acting comes out of that "unsullied" part. I expect much from her in the future.
패셔니스타 배두나 영광이다. 그리고 패셔니스타라는 타이틀이 그리 싫지 않다.
What do you think of Doona Bae the fashionista? I am honored and I don't dislike the title.
배우로서 멋있어 보여야 한다고 생각한다. 공식 석상에서는 더욱더. 솔직히 예쁜 걸 좋아하기도 하고. 하지만 완벽하게 꾸미는 걸 선호하지는 않는다. 그래서 집 밖을 나가기 전에 꼭 '빈틈'이 있는지를 확인한다. 빈틈을 없애기 위해서가 아니라 빈틈을 만들려고. 빈틈이 조금 있는 스타일이 더 좋다.
I believe actors have to look wonderful. Especially in public events... To be frank, I like pretty things. But I do not prefer 'perfect looks'. So before I leave home, I check myself for something "missing". This is not to fill in the lack but to make something missing. I like it better if the style needs a little something.
키엘과 사회 공헌 캠페인 그동안 나는 그저 연기를 직업으로 하는 사람이라고만 생각하고 아직 사회적으로 어떤 의견을 말하거나 좋은 일을 한다며 거창하게 행동하는 것에는 익숙지 않았다.
About Kiehl's and their collaboration in Kiehl's philanthropic project: Until now I only regarded myself as a professional actor so I refrained from making social comments or made big to-do saying I am trying to something good (for others).
솔직히 사회 공헌이라는 캠페인의 타이틀이 거창하게 느껴지기도 하고, 약간 쑥스럽기도 하다. 하지만 키엘이 오랫동안 진정성을 가지고 사회 공헌 활동을 하고 있는 점은 큰 의미가 있고, 한 가지 일을 꾸준히 해 나간다는 것이 나에게는 아주 중요하게 다가왔다. 내가 하고 있는 연기도 마찬가지라고 생각한다.
Actually the title of 'philanthropic Campaign" seems to much and I am a little embarrassed as well. But Kiehl's has been doing this for a long time with real dedication means a lot. The fact that they have dedicated themselves to a single cause seemed significant to me. It is the same with the kind of acting I have been doing.
"할리우드 영화를 찍었다고 해서 달라진 건 없어요. 스케일이나 역할의 비중이 아닌 시나리오 자체에 빠져들면 작은 배역이라도 선택하게 되죠."
"I have not changed because I've been in Hollywood movies. If I like the scenario ( and I do not go for the scale of the movie or the size of my role), I choose to do the role however minor it is." |
