Translation of a Dong-A Ilbo interview piece on Doona |

Hello, dear Nadoo Nadoos,
There are many favorable articles and tweets out there for Doheeya and especially on Doona's amazing acting in it. I have found one interview piece by a Korean newspaper, DongpA Ilbo i like. I would like to share it here with you. As usual, the translation is rough, done by yours truly, Emmy.
The piece was written by Min Byung Seon.
Doona Bae (35) is a true actor. She chooses to act in a movie that is based on a great script rather than going for the one with the character that will highlight herself. "Doheeya" (opening on 5/22/2014 in South Korea) is the proof.
배두나(35)는 배우다운 배우다. 자기에게 유리한 배역보다는 시나리오가 좋은 영화를 고른다. 22일 개봉하는 ‘도희야’도 이런 경우다.
She is one of the few Korean actors who have ventured to Hollywood. She's worked in big budget movies such as the Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter Ascending (opening this July in Korea), and came back after 2 years to appear in a low budget indie movie whose budget was under 500 million won.
그는 할리우드에 진출한 몇 안 되는 한국 배우. 제작비가 1억 달러(약 1022억 원)가 넘는 워쇼스키 남매 감독의 ‘클라우드 아틀라스’(2012년)와 ‘주피터 어센딩’(7월 국내 개봉)에 출연하고 2년 만에 한국 영화에 돌아왔다. 그가 고른 작품은 제작비가 5억 원도 안 되는 작은 영화.
"I decided to do Doheeya within 5 minutes of reading the script. Usually you can tell if your character is going to be the one to show you off or not when you read the script. Doheeya's script told me that my character was not going to show me off. Still it was a very fascinating script."
“시나리오를 읽고 5분 만에 (출연하기로) 결정했어요. 대본을 읽으면 제가 돋보일 수 있는 캐릭터인지 금방 알아요. 이번엔 아니었어요. 그런데도 시나리오가 너무 매력적인 거 있죠.”
This was how Doona talked about her new movie with much enthusiasm at a cafe in Seoul on 05/13.
13일 서울 종로구의 한 카페에서 마주 앉은 배두나는 신나게 영화를 설명했다.
"Dohee's character was absolutely wonderful. I thought that it was enough to be on the side of such a character. My fellow cast member, Song Sae-Byuk, and I said 'let's be at Dohee's side as her Knights of Guard'. I would have loved to play Dohee only if I were 20 years younger."
“도희 캐릭터가 굉장히 좋았어요. 그 옆에 있기만 해도 좋다고 생각했죠. (함께 출연한) 송새벽과 ‘우리 좌청룡 우백호로 도희 옆에 있자’고 했어요. 20년만 어렸으면 도희 역을 했을 텐데.”
Doona plays an elite police officer, Young Nam, who is a Police Academy graduate. She was sent down to a small seaside village police station, and meets Dohee who is a victim of abuse from her step father and grandmother. Young Nam tries to protect Dohee as if she is Dohee's mother or sister. Dohee's stepfather who gets into trouble with the law after beating a foreign laborer tries to blackmail Young Nam with her secret.
배두나가 맡은 역할은 경찰대를 나온 엘리트 영남이다. 영남은 좌천돼 어촌의 파출소장으로 발령받고 그곳에서 엄마 없이 의붓아버지 용하(송새벽)와 할머니의 폭행에 시달리는 여중생 도희(김새론)를 만난다. 영남은 도희를 엄마처럼, 언니처럼 보듬는다. 함께 일하는 이주노동자를 폭행한 용하는 영남의 약점을 잡아 죄를 덮으려 한다.
Young Nam who is a police becomes one of the weak because of her secret. She constructs a safe haven with Dohee. The voice of the movie is warm and yet provocative. Doheeya was invited to Cannes as one of 'Un certain Regard' selection.
경찰이면서도 개인적인 사연 때문에 약자일 수밖에 없는 영남. 그는 보호받지 못하는 또 다른 약자 도희와 그들만의 안전망을 엮어간다. 올해 칸 영화제 ‘주목할 만한 시선’ 부문에 초청된 영화의 시선은 따뜻하면서도 도발적이다.
"I have played characters who were free and unrestrained. But Young Nam is closed and secretive. She wants to be the mother to Dohee but her secret does not make it easy for her to do that."
“저는 그동안 자유분방한 캐릭터만 해왔는데, 영남은 답답하고 비밀을 간직한 인물이에요. 모성 본능으로 도희를 돌보고 싶지만 그럴 수 없는 사연이 있어서 안타깝죠.”
The movie was filmed last year in Yeosoo, Soonchon and Keum Oh Island in Cholla province. She drove herself to and from locations since she was not with a management agency.
영화의 대부분은 지난해 전남 여수, 순천, 금오도 일대에서 촬영했다. 당시 그는 소속사가 없어 매니저도 없이 직접 차를 몰고 촬영지를 다녔다.
"When I was working in Hollywood everybody was nice to me but I felt very lonely. I needed to act by myself in front of the green screen for Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. But this time I had an acting partner and the sea. Ha ha, I was very happy."
“할리우드에서 촬영할 때 다들 잘해주셨지만 그렇게 외로울 수가 없었어요. ‘클라우드 아틀라스’와 ‘주피터 어센딩’에서는 혼자 그린 스크린(컴퓨터그래픽 작업을 위한 녹색 배경)에서 연기하는 게 많았어요. 이번에는 상대도 있고 바다도 있고. 하하, 아주 행복했죠.”
However, she had a tough time filming the bathroom scene at Namyangjoo film set. The filming took 32 hours straight and she had to stay in water for 12 hours.
하지만 경기 남양주종합촬영소 세트에서 찍은 욕실 장면에서는 고생 좀 했다. 32시간 연속 촬영했고 이 중 12시간은 욕조에 들어가 있어야 했다.
"I used to be fine with all-nighters but now I feel extremely tired after 2 am"
“예전에는 밤을 새워도 끄떡없었는데, 이제 새벽 2시만 넘으면 ‘그분’(극도의 피로감)이 와요.”
She's worked with such famous directors as Bong Joon-Ho (Barking dogs never bite, The host), Park Chan-Wook (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance) and Koreeda Hirokazu (Air Doll). But Doheeya was directed by a rookie director, Jung Joo Ri (34).
그는 봉준호(‘플란다스의 개’ ‘괴물’) 박찬욱(‘복수는 나의 것’) 고레에다 히로카즈(‘공기인형’) 같은 쟁쟁한 감독들과 함께했다. 하지만 ‘도희야’는 이번이 데뷔작인 신인 정주리 감독(34)이 연출했다.
"Actors are very sensitive to filming enviroment. The characters in this movie have inner lives that seem calm but violent in truth. But the director did not get upset even once until the end. She has a tremendous will power."
“배우는 촬영 현장에서 엄청 예민해요. 이번 영화 속 인물들은 내면이 잔잔한 듯 소용돌이치는 캐릭터죠. 그런데 감독님이 끝까지 화 한번 큰 소리 한번 안 내더라고요. 뚝심이 대단해요.”
She has added another badge of honor to her acting career. She is going to walk on Cannes' red carpet on 05/14 for the 2nd time.
그는 배우 경력에 또 훈장을 달았다. 2009년 ‘공기인형’ 이후 두 번째로 14일(현지 시간) 개막하는 칸 영화제 레드카펫을 밟는다.
"I still don't have a manual or the Technique for my acting. It's always like building a sand castle and then letting it go. Please don't count on my words on it.'
“아직 연기의 매뉴얼도 테크닉도 없어요. 항상 모래성을 쌓다가 다시 흩뜨리는 느낌이죠. 제발 저를 믿지 마세요.” |
