Musings on Doona and us Nadoos |

I don't know what I ate recently but something has woken a bad philosophizing monkey inside me.
So I have been thinking on what we the Nodoos, Doona Bae fans, might mean to Doona and what she means to her fans personally. The thing is although we call ourselves Doona Bae fans and put ourselves in one big group, we are all made up with individual "I"s and we are as different from each other as our various personal lives are. So even before we get into figuring out what could Doona possibly need and get from the Nadoos, we will first need to think about what we are actually trying to get from "Doona" the object of our fangirling.
If I may talk about myself, the aspect I enjoy the most from Doona fandom, is the sisterhood aspect. It's like as if Doona is one of my BFF, and she has brought other BFFs of hers to be my BFFs. Do I make sense? And like having a girls' night out or a sleep-over, we chat about the fascinating subject of Doona Bae, the actor/model extraordinaire, instead of other boring things.
One person I got to know in the Doona fandom was a young Korean adoptee living in an European country. She told me how she met Doona in Dir. Chan-Wook Park's "Sympathy for Mr. Revenge" about 12 years ago; she told me how Doona and her works have brought her many joys and helped her to build a self-identity as a Korean woman.
So we come to Doona with our various personal lives and histories: she means all these different but all equally important things to us. And we also come to her with our varied expectations. As for me, my expectation of her is that she continues to be the extraordinary actor that she is. That she continues to challenge herself as an artist. That she becomes the world famous and properly repected actor of her generation in and outside Korea. She might think I am expecting too much from her, but then I believe in her talent and willingness to give it all for her acting.
We then continue to the next question: We the Nodoos are all different but aren't we all equal in our love of/for Doona? I don't know about Doona's own opinion, but an idealist democrat in me says, "Yes! Of course!" But of course things are not that easy. The fandom by nature is more of a feudal monarchy rather than a democracy with a , say, Madame President. There are many divides within a fandom and each group struggles for the ultimate prize-the affectionate and close relationship with the star of that particular fandom. There are the old fans who go way back when with the star. There are the newer fans who are full of zeal and passion. There are-like in case of Doona-the "native" fans who are based in the star's native country. There are international fans. There are male fans and there are female fans. And you get the idea. And they all crave that personal attention from their star.
I believe it is a natural thing for a fan to seek that personal connection with her/his star. I mean, a small thing such as a nod or a "hello" will do for a fan. Because the star is recognizing you as a person worthy of his/her attention. It means your effort, time, love and money (most of the times) did not get wasted for nothing. It will re-fuel the fan's devotion and joy in fangirling for that star.
So in this, we the Nadoos are eqaul. We are all equal in our love of Doona Bae. We are all equal in our need to be recognized as her fans.
I think it just darn wonderful that Doona is an affectionate and kind star to her fans, who is well known to be more than willing to form meaningful relationships with her fans. Without doubt, the Nadoos are known to be the most loyal and devoted group of fans.
If I can make a tiny wish as a humble up-start Nadoo, it is this: that the Nadoos understand and recognize the fact that Doona, more than ever, needs the love and support of all different groups of the Nadoos. In Korea, she will need the support of the homegroud Nadoos. Internationally, she will of course need the love and cheerings from her international fans especially in the land of internet and social media.The old fans will provide her with that intimacy only the old fans can give. The newer fans will provide her with more energy with their enthusiasm. She will need all of the Nadoos to come out to go watch her latest movie or buy DVDs of it. She will need all of us enthusiastically spreading Doona love. And at this juncture of her life and career, I believe she needs the support from us all.
Well, this became a rather of a "we should" harangue. But I think I needed to put this one out there. Because out of all the celebrities in the world, she's become the only dearest one for me. |
